A reckless, passionate affair… (AKA: The Australian Housing Bubble)

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Whilst going through my old college books a few months ago I discovered my copy of ‘Money & Friends’ by David Williamson which I studied for English. Written in 1991, the play is set in the late 80s about a person who has lost $40,000 from a failed due to the property bubble popping. Interestingly,  I spotted this foreword by the Chairman and Editorial Director of BRW Publications, Robert Gottliebsen, who prophetically predicted in 1991; “that sometime in the 21st Century, once again, property will lure Australians into reckless investing helped by bankers who will have forgotten history.” Amazing to think it took little longer than a decade for the property ponzi bubble to inflate again…

Anyhow, for your reading pleasure, I have scanned the foreword below:

Comrades!

This is my first blog post for my blog ‘bleeding capital.’ I called it that because the western economies are presently hemorrhaging capital in the way of debt; plus it rhymes with David Harvey’s excellent course.

I am currenly half way through the book and I have to say that Harvey’s videos have given me a far deeper and richer understanding. I have to admit that I actually enjoyed the first three chapters and recommend that segment of the book for anybody interested in ‘fiat money.’

Anyhow, here is a sign that hyper-inflation is on the horizon – gold vending machines: http://www.dailyreckoning.com.au/a-golden-vending-machine/2009/06/18/
